Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card is the industry's largest `scheme and, at present, covers 220 occupations including trades, technical, supervisory and management.
CSCS cards list the holder’s qualifications and are valid for either three or five years. It also shows they have health and safety awareness as all cardholders have to pass the appropriate CITB-ConstructionSkills Health and Safety Test.

Professionally Qualified Person Card (PQP)

The yellow PQP card is for non-site based professionals who have health and safety responsibilities such as Consultants, Client Architects, Surveyors and Engineers, but are not resident on site (CSCS defines residency as normally spending no more than 30 days on site in any six month period).

Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)

Most contractors and clients now demand proof of competence, before allowing workers onto their sites, which is provided by a CSCS card.

Not having a CSCS card may affect your ability to work on certain sites. For more information contact us for details.

The Health & Safety Test

The ConstructionSkills Health & Safety Test is the industry standard, taken by over  500,000 people every year. It is designed to ensure everybody working in construction has a minimum level of health and safety awareness.

Passing the test is an essential part of qualifying for the major card schemes such as Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and affiliated schemes. Without the right card, it's increasingly difficult to get on site.

Professionally Qualified Person Card (PQP)

In order to apply for a card the applicant must:

  • Be a competence assessed member of an approved institution
  • Pass the PQP Health and Safety test (please note that there are specific revision materials for this test)
  • Have up to date continuing professional development records for the last two years relevant to the area of work in which they are in.

Cards are valid for five years and are renewal on re-verification of the PQP criteria.

Those wishing to apply for a CSCS PQP card, should contact us now.

Background

CSCS launches Professionally Qualified Persons Card

08 November 2006

CSCS today announced the launch of a new Professional Qualified Persons (PQP) card.

The card widens the scope of CSCS to cover non-site based professionals who have health and safety responsibilities – such as consultants, clients and engineers – to ensure that everyone in the construction industry can demonstrate competence, qualifications and health and safety awareness.

Almost 20 professional institutions, including the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Royal Institution of British Architects and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors have had their qualifications and membership criteria reviewed as part of the process for creating the new card. The criteria for members of Professional Institutions who would be eligible for the Professionally Qualified Persons card are:

  • Professional institutions whose qualifications have been mapped against S/NVQ and approved for recognition against existing CSCS platinum or black occupational cards
  • Professional institutions whose qualifications are regulated by the Engineering Council
  • Architects Registration Board whose qualifications are regulated by statute.

The card will identify an individual’s professional institution and will only be issued to professionals who can demonstrate a high level of health and safety knowledge though the achievement of a new Higher Managerial Health and Safety Test. The Test was developed by CSCS, CITB-ConstructionSkills and the Construction Industry Council (CIC) in close conjunction with professional institutions and consultancies.
